How Molino calculates couple compatibility: the 5 layers behind the number
The % you see in Couple Mode doesn't come from a single system — it's a weighted average of five different layers. This is how that number is built, layer by layer, with no hidden methods.

When two people use Molino's Couple Mode, the final result is a single number — a compatibility percentage. It's tempting to treat it as a closed calculation ('the algorithm said 78%'), but it isn't: that number comes from averaging five different layers, each with a specific weight, and all five are calculated with real data from the two people, not with a random score.
We publish this breakdown because we believe a number without its method behind it is useless — and because a compatibility score you can't take apart is indistinguishable from a roll of the dice.
The five layers and their real weight
The final score combines five layers with these weights: numerology 25%, Western astrology 25%, Chinese zodiac 20%, archetype 20% and element 10%. No single layer defines the result on its own — by design, so that a strong clash in one dimension doesn't sink the whole score, and a strong affinity in one doesn't inflate it artificially either.
Numerology and Western astrology weigh the same (25% each) because in Molino they're treated as the two most structural layers of a person's map. Chinese zodiac and archetype weigh a little less (20% each) because they describe more general patterns. The astrological element weighs less (10%) because it's already partly reflected in the other layers — it's weighted low so as not to duplicate signal.
What each layer measures, in plain words
Numerology compares the core numbers of each map (Life Path, Expression, among others) and evaluates how aligned they are. Western astrology compares sun signs and their traditional relationships (compatible elements, classic tensions between signs). The Chinese zodiac does the same but with the animals of the 12-year cycle — the triads and harmonious pairs we already explained in another article.
Archetype compares the personality profiles Molino derives from the full map — it looks for complementarity (opposites that balance each other) or resonance (direct affinities). Element compares each person's dominant astrological element (fire, earth, air, water) as an additional, finer layer on top of Western astrology.
Why we show you all five layers, not just the average
A 65% compatibility can mean very different things depending on where it comes from. If it comes from very high numerology (95%) and very weak astrology (30%), that couple's challenge is probably in how they communicate and not in their underlying values. If the same 65% comes from five layers that are all moderate, it's a completely different picture: even, with no marked peaks or valleys.
The average alone doesn't distinguish these two scenarios — that's why Couple Mode always shows the full breakdown, not just the final number. Strengths and tensions are generated automatically from which layers ended up above or below certain thresholds, so the text you see also comes from the same breakdown, not from a separate interpretation.
Frequently asked questions
Does a low score mean the relationship doesn't work?
No. It's a symbolic reading of patterns, not a prediction or a diagnosis of the real relationship. A low score in Couple Mode describes tension in certain systemic patterns — how two people end up resolving that tension depends on factors no symbolic system can measure.
Why does Western astrology weigh the same as numerology?
It's a Molino design decision, not a universal truth of any traditional system — we chose to weight them equally because we consider both layers describe deep personality structure, unlike more superficial layers such as the element.
Can the weighting of the layers be changed?
It's not configurable from the interface today — it's a fixed value in the calculation engine. We document it here precisely so it's clear what you're seeing, even if you can't adjust it yourself yet.
