Expression Number: how it's calculated from your name (with accents and ñ)
The Expression Number comes from the letters of your full name. The Pythagorean table, a step-by-step example and what to do with accents, the ñ and compound names.

If the Life Path Number comes from your date of birth, the Expression Number comes from your name. Numerology reads it as the way your abilities come into play: not where you're going, but with what tools.
The calculation is simple, but names in Spanish and other languages have two traps most English-only calculators don't handle: accents and the ñ.
The Pythagorean table
Each letter is worth a number from 1 to 9, following the order of the alphabet and starting over every nine letters.
- 1: A, J, S
- 2: B, K, T
- 3: C, L, U
- 4: D, M, V
- 5: E, N, W
- 6: F, O, X
- 7: G, P, Y
- 8: H, Q, Z
- 9: I, R
Step-by-step example
Take «Ana López». A (1) + N (5) + A (1) = 7. L (3) + O (6) + P (7) + E (5) + Z (8) = 29. In total, 7 + 29 = 36, and 3 + 6 = 9. The Expression Number is 9.
As with the Life Path Number, if 11, 22 or 33 appears at any step of the reduction, it's left as is: they're master numbers and aren't reduced.
Accents, ñ and other marks
Accents don't change the letter: the ó in López is worth the same as an o, the í in María the same as an i. The ñ counts as n (5) and the ü as u. Spaces, hyphens and apostrophes don't add anything.
This matters more than it seems: a calculator that discards accented letters instead of counting them takes a vowel away from María, José or Martín and gives a different number.
Which name to use
The Pythagorean tradition uses your full birth name, exactly as it appears on your birth certificate: all your given names and all your surnames. That's what's considered your name «of origin».
If you use another name in daily life — a nickname, a married name, a stage name — you can calculate it too. Many numerologists read it as the energy of that stage or role, without replacing the birth name.
What each number means
The archetypes are the same as in the Life Path Number; what changes is the reading. In the Life Path Number they describe the path; in the Expression Number, how you travel it.
