Astrological compatibility

Classical astrology doesn't compare signs by sympathy: it looks at three things — which element each one belongs to, which modality it has and how far apart they sit on the wheel. With those three rules you can build the reading of any pair.

1. The four elements

Each sign belongs to an element, and each element groups three signs. Signs of the same element share motivations; those of compatible elements (Fire with Air, Earth with Water) complement each other.

Fire
Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Drive, enthusiasm, initiative.
Earth
Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
Steadiness, practicality, the body.
Air
Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Ideas, words, social bonds.
Water
Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Emotion, intuition, care.

2. How the elements combine

The ten possible combinations, with the dynamic tradition assigns to each one:

Fire with FireNatural resonance

Both are Fire: they understand each other by instinct, share motivations and don't need to translate what they feel.

Fire and EarthDrive and pragmatism

Fire pushes Earth to take risks; Earth helps Fire make things concrete. If they don't respect each other's timing, one feels held back and the other rushed.

Fire and AirDynamism and expansion

Air fans Fire and Fire puts passion into Air's ideas: they get excited together.

Fire and WaterSteam and transformation

Fire heats Water and Water can put out Fire: magnetism and intensity, with the challenge of regulating the temperature.

Earth with EarthNatural resonance

Both are Earth: they understand each other by instinct, share motivations and don't need to translate what they feel.

Earth and AirIdeas and facts

Air thinks in possibilities and Earth in what can be sustained. Air gives Earth perspective and Earth gives shape to Air's ideas — or they lose patience with each other.

Earth and WaterFertility and containment

Earth gives Water a channel and Water softens Earth's firmness: one holds, the other nourishes.

Air with AirNatural resonance

Both are Air: they understand each other by instinct, share motivations and don't need to translate what they feel.

Air and WaterMind and emotion

Air tries to understand with its head what Water feels without words. They enrich each other if one listens and the other explains.

Water with WaterNatural resonance

Both are Water: they understand each other by instinct, share motivations and don't need to translate what they feel.

3. The three modalities

Modality says how each sign moves. Two signs of the same modality want the same thing — to start, to sustain or to adapt — and that's why they sometimes compete for the same place.

Initiates

Cardinal

Opens each season: starts, proposes, takes the lead.

Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn

Sustains

Fixed

Sits in the middle of the season: consolidates, persists, looks after what's there.

Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius

Adapts

Mutable

Closes the season: bends, connects, prepares the change.

Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces

4. Distance on the wheel

Counting how many signs separate two people on the wheel (from 0 to 6) gives you the aspect between them. It's the rule that weighs most in the reading of a pair:

conjunctionsame sign · High, mirrored

Both they recognize each other at once: they're the same sign. They share virtues, tastes and rhythm — and also the same blind spots, which nobody makes up for.

semisextile1 sign · 30° · Medium

Both they're neighbors on the wheel: different element, different rhythm and different polarity. At first it's hard to meet; over time, each shows the other what they don't see.

sextile2 signs · 60° · High

Both they form a sextile, the aspect of opportunity: elements that complement each other and the same polarity. The chemistry is easy, but it pays off only if they work at it.

square3 signs · 90° · Challenging

Both they form a square, the aspect of friction: they share a modality but not an element, so both want the same thing in different ways. There's spark and there's clash; it works if they choose it.

trine4 signs · 120° · Very high

Both they form a trine, the smoothest aspect: they share an element and understand each other effortlessly. The risk is comfort — what's easy doesn't always push you to grow.

quincunx5 signs · 150° · Medium-low

Both they form a quincunx: they share no element, rhythm or polarity. There's no head-on clash but there are misunderstandings — they speak different languages and need to adjust all the time.

opposition6 signs · 180° · Complementary

Both they're on opposite sides of the wheel: what one lacks, the other has in excess. They attract strongly and balance each other, or they polarize if each stays at their own end.
